J.C. Stinville Receives 2026 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign is pleased to announce that Professor J.C. Stinville has received the 2026 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research from the Grainger College of Engineering.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions in experimental mechanics, advanced materials characterization, and artificial intelligence for materials science. Professor Stinville’s research combines high-resolution experimental methods, including electron microscopy, EBSD, and digital image correlation, with machine learning and materials informatics to better understand deformation, damage, and performance of structural materials.

His group has recently developed new approaches in Material Spatial Intelligence (MSI), integrating multimodal experimental datasets with advanced AI frameworks to accelerate the prediction and optimization of mechanical properties in metallic materials. These efforts support applications ranging from aerospace and energy systems to advanced manufacturing and extreme environments.

“This recognition reflects the tremendous work and dedication of the students, postdoctoral researchers, collaborators, who contribute to our research program,” said Stinville. “We are excited to continue developing new experimental and AI-driven approaches for the future of materials science.”
Professor Stinville’s research program at Illinois focuses on the development of high-fidelity experimental datasets, autonomous characterization platforms, and interpretable AI models for understanding the relationships between microstructure, deformation, and material performance.

The Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research honors faculty members whose research achievements have had significant impact within their fields and beyond
